Todays News Update Three: 1 September 2008

Update as of 1200 Eastern Time:

Bottom Line Up Front:
1. Gustav has made landfall. All eyes appear to be on the Industrial Canal right now.
2. Why is Sarah Palin's daughter breaking news?

From Fox News:

Hurricane Gustav made landfall Monday morning as a slightly weakened category 2 storm, blowing towards southern Louisiana in Houma, southwest of New Orleans. But its winds walloped the Crescent City, with waves lashing the Industrial Canal on a levee opposite the one that breached and flooded the Lower 9th Ward during Hurricane Katrina three years ago.

The storm made landfall just before 10 a.m. near Cocodrie, the heart of the state's fishing and oil industry, with winds just shy of 110 mph. Earlier, a weather station in Southwest Pass, La. recorded a sustained wind of 91 mph, with a gust of 117 mph just before 5 a.m.

Water overtopped the Industrial Canal levee into the Upper 9th Ward, though it appeared to be structurally sound. City officials said that a barge and two ships — among them a decommissioned Navy ship — had broken free in the canal, but crews were able to tie down the barge soon after.

A railroad bridge across the Industrial Canal is in the down position causing a 3-foot backup of water, The Times-Picayune reported. Officials said the bridge could be lifted, but cannot sustain hurricane-force winds.

"We are seeing some overtopping waves," said Col. Jeff Bedey, commander of the Army Corps of Engineers' hurricane protection office. "We are cautiously optimistic and confident that we won't see catastrophic wall failure."

From CNN:

The eye of Hurricane Gustav made landfall near Cocodrie, Louisiana, about 9:30 a.m. CT, the National Hurricane Center said.

Winds were sending whitecaps over levees in New Orleans, but the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reported no major problems.

There were reports of water going over the Industrial Canal levee near a railroad bridge, said Chris Macaluso, a spokesman for the Louisiana Office of Coastal Protection and Restoration. The Port of New Orleans will raise the bridge to ease pressure on the system, he said.

The Industrial Canal levee failed during Hurricane Katrina in 2005, devastating the Lower Ninth Ward and neighboring St. Bernard Parish.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency said two Navy boats that were being scrapped at a facility on the canal broke away from their moorings and were driven against the pilings of a nearby bridge.

A tow boat was being dispatched to retrieve the vessels, the agency said. Brandon Touchard, emergency coordinator of St. Charles Parish, said that five barges had also come loose there.

Gustav made landfall Monday morning near the coastal town of Cocodrie, Louisiana, about 80 miles southwest of New Orleans.

Now this is just sad. The Internet conspiracy theory bunch has created such a stir over this that Sarah Palin had to say something. Honestly I don't care. I give the daughter a lot of credit for what she is doing. But why is this breaking news. This is as personal as it gets for their family. This is as personal as it gets for her daughter, who by the way if I'm not mistaken is a minor. Why this is being blasted across the entire country to include the living rooms of all her friends in Alaska is atrocious. To be honest, I'm just disgusted that people have sunk this low to trying to find dirt on someone who is an upstanding classy person that they stoop to digging up dirt on their family. It makes me sick to be honest. I'm putting the links below, but I'm not even putting any excerpts in. My thoughts and prayers are with them, and I'm sorry that people out there have done this.

Bristol Palin has made a mistake, one all too common among our youth, and one that I am personally familiar with. She has however made a good decision in a bad situation, keeping the baby and marrying the dad, as opposed to the easy way out. She deserves credit for that. But to the opposition she is a pawn they can use to cover their own hypocrisy.

And this is nothing compared to the vile garbage they spread that Bristol was actually the mother of Trig, Sarah's youngest with Downs Syndrome, and that Palin faked her own pregnancy to cover it up. They even went so far as to say that the husband, or Track, Sarah's oldest and Bristol's brother, was the father. These people are beyond disgusting.
