Twitter, Facebook, Blogging and the Military

Danger Room Article: http://www.wired.com/dangerroom/2009/07/military-may-ban-twitter-facebook-as-security-headaches/

I caught this story from Danger Room today, and to be honest I was very disappointed. Now, just to preface this with, it seems this is just a review and that means that a recommendation would have to be made and then approved. But, the Danger Room Article also sited sources inside of US STRATCOM that stated this was pretty much a done deal. If this was a typical MSM outlet stating that I would be suspect. But, I have a great deal of respect for the Danger Room Staff. They run a top notch outfit over there. Usually when they make a statement like that, its pretty true.

So why am I disappointed? I came into the Army in 1997. As a young LT the first class I was given on media was that they were basically the enemy and to stay away. If you couldn't stay away then watch every word you said, only state what you had been authorized to say, and have a supervisor observe you. How far we have come.

Fast Forward to 2004 in Iraq. I had four of the best embedded media I could ever dream of, to include Michael Yon at our Battalion Level with the Battalion Commander. 2007 in Afghanistan, we worked with our media, international media, and bloggers to get the stories of America's Soldiers to the American People. The American People had a right to know what was really happening, and by God, we were going to tell them what their wonderful sons and daughters were doing.

In 2008, LTG Caldwell here at Fort Leavenworth made it mandatory for students at the Command and General Staff College to blog about the military and their experiences. True to the great leader that he is, he started his own blog at the same time. US Forces Afghanistan, ISAF, even the Chairmen of the Joint Chiefs have joined the web 2.0 revolution and are trying to connect with the American People thru Twitter, Facebook, and their own blogs. I believe ADM Mullen is at 4000 followers on Twitter and USFOR-A broke 20,000 fans on Facebook last week.

This is a tremendous change that I have seen in 12 years. The military has embraced the web and understands that as Military Professionals it is part of our job to tell the American Soldier's Stories to the American People. Great leaders as I cited above have spearheaded it, and they deserve a great deal of respect for what they have done.

Now, we have the issue of security concerns. It used to be an issue of OPSEC. But, as we discovered, through proper training you can explain what can be talked about and what can not be talked about, and the incidents of OPSEC violations has been so low, I would term it negligible. Now, again, there is another concern. Instead of training our Soldiers, or putting more security in place, the recommendation is to just cut it off. Im sorry, but that is not the way the Military works. We do not shoot the messenger, we do not throw the baby out with the bath water. If there is a problem or a challenge we confront it, find a solution, and implement it.

As more and more comes out about this, I will continue to follow it and report on it. Some of the questions right now are: Does this apply to Internet cafes in theater, would this also cover blogging sites, would this also apply to mail services such as Gmail and Yahoo Mail that have chat and group functions. I just don't know. But I will be following it and reporting on it.

We have come too far as a Professional Military to just cut things off dead in the water. The American People deserve to know what their wonderful sons and daughters are doing overseas, in harms way. It is our job to tell that to you as Military Professionals. I truly hope that logic prevails in this situation.

God Bless America

H1N1 AKA "Swine-Flu"

From Fox News: http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/07/29/military-poised-help-fema-battle-swine-flu-outbreak/

The Pentagon is preparing to help the Federal Emergency Management Agency tackle a potential outbreak of the H1N1 virus this fall, FOX News has confirmed.

This comes as a government panel recommends certain groups be placed at the front of the line for swine flu vaccinations this fall, including pregnant women, health care workers, and children six months and older.

The panel also said those first vaccinated should include parents and other caregivers of infants; non-elderly adults who have high-risk medical conditions; and young adults ages 19 to 24.

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices voted to set vaccination priorities for those groups Wednesday during a meeting in Atlanta. The panel's recommendations are usually adopted by federal health officials.

The vote comes as Defense Secretary Robert Gates prepares to sign an executive order authorizing the military to set up five regional teams to deal with the potential outbreak of H1N1 influzena if FEMA requests help.

A senior U.S. defense official told FOX News that the plan calls for military task forces to work in conjunction with the FEMA. No final decision has been reached on how the military effort would be manned, but one source said it would likely include personnel from all branches of the military.

From WSJ: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124887563173290207.html

Pregnant women, children, young adults and health-care workers are among those groups who should be first in line to receive a vaccine against the H1N1 swine flu vaccine, a federal advisory panel recommended Wednesday.

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, a body that advises the federal government on vaccine matters, nearly unanimously voted to offer the new vaccine first to pregnant women, household contacts and caregivers of infants under six months old, health-care and emergency-services workers, children and young adults up to age 24, and people under 64 years old with underlying medical conditions.

Those groups are considered at highest risk of complications from the new flu virus, which has caused 43,771 cases in the U.S. as of July 24, including 5,011 hospitalizations and 302 deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The agency says 70% of the people hospitalized for the disease have had underlying medical conditions.

The panel made a point of including young adults from ages 19 to 24 in the priority group because many live in close quarters on college campuses where they can quickly spread the illness, or work in service or entry-level jobs where they can spread it easily among the broader population.

Taliban Code of Conduct

A number of people have asked me my opinions about the Taliban's new Code of Conduct. I hope to see the actual document as soon as I can find a translated copy of it. But from the excerpts I have seen, and news stories that have been written in AJE about it, it is very worrisome to me on a number of different levels.

The first area that worries me tremendously about this document is its desire to increase the Taliban's legitimacy. Many analysts have said that this document is an answer to General McChrystal's new ISAF Tactical Directive. Well, that may be part of the story, but I do not feel it is all of the story. The Taliban for the last 2-3 years has been striving to increase their legitimacy amongst the local populace. They have realized that there are gaps in the Afghan Governments ability to penetrate all of its territory with security, stability, basic sustenance, and governmental infrastructure. They have tried to take advantage of that gap by establishing shadow governments within these areas, and become the de-facto government.

Also, they have taken advantage of the weakened tribal system, and used it to play weak tribes against other weak tribes. They have formed coalitions of smaller tribes to take over areas that other tribes had once inhabited. What does all of this mean? The Taliban have taken a play from Mao and are establishing legitimacy through becoming the de-facto government. For a long time in Afghanistan, the effort for us was at establishing governance at the central level in Kabul. Because of this, local governance was not strengthened as it should have been. Coupled with the issues of penetration by the Afghan Government, this has allowed the Taliban to become a legitimate force and government in many of these areas. This code of conduct in my opinion is just the next step in achieving greater legitimacy at the local level.

Secondly, this code of conduct worries me due to its timing. The new tactical directive from ISAF HQ was signed on 6 July 2009. That means that less than two weeks later the Taliban were pushing this new code of conduct. That is an impressive timeline for an organization that is dispersed and spread throughout Afghanistan and Pakistan to publish a concise statement in return. It shows a great deal of synchronization and command and control. The other part of that timing is that this comes out less then a month from the Afghanistan Elections. I highly question how much of this was to also influence voters, and whether it will work. Coupled with the desire to increase their legitimacy, this could be a very ugly development.

Third, it directly targets its fighters that have been inflicting civilian casualties on the local populace. One of the great tensions that we were able to take advantage of in Iraq was the fact that Zarqawi was inflicting pain and death upon the local populace. Zawahiri even realized this, and admonished him a number of times for it, even going so far as to say that those actions could lead to his downfall. Of course, Zarqawi did not listen, life is always better when the enemy is stupid, and continued to provide that tension point for us to attack.

Mullah Omar and his good friend Zawahiri know this. They know they need the local populace to win. If they can influence them through all of their other efforts and not commit violence against them, they can stand to gain even more legitimacy and control over the populace. The new ISAF Tactical Directive is dead on the money with trying to avoid civilian deaths and injuries. The Taliban realized this and in my opinion were drawing us into fights that could result in civilian casualties they could claim we created. They also know they can not do this, and are now avoiding it themselves. Just another way for them to seem even more legitimate to the local populace.

Fourth and finally, within the code of conduct it clearly lays out a command and control system for the Taliban. Mullah Omar is consolidating his power and control over the various elements. Now, this possibly could lead to some tension with men like Haqqani. Haqqani has thrown in with the Taliban for now, how long that lasts I just do not know. If Mullah Omar had not addressed this with him prior, this could lead to some exploitable tensions for us. But, unfortunately, Mullah Omar and Zawahiri are not stupid like Zarqawi was. If this is in there, I tend to believe that men like Haqqani were talked to about this before hand. So now a dispersed operation begins to become more centralized, and more coordinated. Both for tactical actions, operational actions, illicit trade and money, and local populace support. Not a good situation.

These are the reasons I am worried about what I read. I think the Taliban are trying to take their fight to the next level. They have been building forces, and attempting to gain a great deal of legitimacy amongst the local populace. Very luckily for us, we have men like GEN McChrystal and LTG Rodriguez who are taking ISAF in the right direction. We are focusing upon the local level, bolstering the Afghans, and taking the fight to the enemy all over the country. Exactly what the Taliban does not want us to do.

God Bless America

Murphy's Law and the End Of Wars

General Petraeus wisely said once, "Tell me how this ends." It is a very wise and poignant question that we could talk about for days. But, I am going to focus upon what comes after how the Wars end.

The Korean War ended July 27th, 1953. Much has been written about the issues and challenges the the United States Army found itself in, with the beginning of that war. The Pusan Perimeter, Task Force Smith, etc, etc, etc. I think how it ended though was even more important. For that matter how many of our wars ended.

Lets take a quick spin back to the turn of the century. The Spanish American War had ended and we were engaged in a counter-insurgency fight in the Philippines. As that ended in the Philippines and our young field and company grade officers returned to Fort Leavenworth for school, they were greatly dismayed that only conventional military theory was being taught. The great prevailing feeling was that this was a thing of the past and counter-insurgency was the wave of the future. Unfortunately as we all know, barring General Pershing in Mexico, the next conflict that we would be engaged in was World War One.

World War One came upon Europe, and the United States entered the War a couple of years later. As the War ended, the United States drastically down-sized it's military forces and regulated much of them to duty in the Philippines and the Reserves. The prevailing feeling was that a large scale conventional war was not overshadowing us, and was not to be worried about. Truth be told, right up until Pearl Harbor there were isolationists in the the United States decrying our involvement in World War Two.

But Pearl Harbor brought us into the War, and we fought and won it. At the end of it, we again began huge down-sizing. Wars of the future would not be fought like that ever again. They would rely upon air power, the nuclear bomb, and a large Navy. The disciples of Billy Mitchell and Duhet were in their personal Nirvana with this. Unfortunately Korea erupted and now we found ourselves in a war where ground power was needed and this strategic bombing capability really did not mean much.

Korea ended and we began gearing up to face the Soviets. We concentrated on Nuclear Deterrence, Strategic Bombing, and large scale conventional battle. Vietnam then happened, and we found ourselves embroiled within a counter-insurgency fight and a conventional fight. I could continue these trends until present-day, but I hope you are beginning to see them.

Whether it was in favor of all conventional, or all un-conventional, putting all of your eggs in one basket is a bad thing. We do not have crystal balls in front of us, like the old gypsy women in the movies. A perfect vision of the future is impossible to obtain. Military forces must be structured to meet any threat that may emerge.

For example, in 1999, how many Americans would have guessed that we would be embroiled in a War that spans all over the Globe, and especially in Afghanistan and Iraq? My guess would be less than 1% had a general idea. Now we just accept this as a fact.

If I asked that same question, but changed it to: How many of you believe we will be involved in a Cold-War or even a hostile war with another rising hegemon or regional hegemon in the next decade? I would bet that again only about 1% would answer yes. To be honest I don't know what the answer is, and I doubt anyone could give a perfect answer with absolute clarity.

That is why a Nation's Military Forces must be structured to meet any and all of it's National Security Objectives. Whether that be small scale contingencies, humanitarian assistance, or large scale conventional wars. To do anything else, and structure a military to only fight part of the possible threats is just short-sighted.

God Bless America

Suicide Attack in Afghanistan

From AJE: http://english.aljazeera.net/news/asia/2009/07/200972512256655472.html

Suspected Taliban suicide bombers have attacked the police headquarters and courthouse in the Afghan eastern city of Khost.

Seven suicide bombers dressed in women's burqas and armed with rocket-propelled grenades and AK-47s carried out the attack on Saturday, the Afghan interior ministry said.

Three of the attackers were shot in front of the gates of the police headquarters, while two other were killed nearby, a ministry spokesman said.

Another attacker was killed when he blew up his vehicle near a bank after he was shot at by police in front of the building.

The last bomber attacked another police building, but it was not immediately clear if he died when he detonated his explosives or whether he had been killed by police.

A candidate in Afghanistan's upcoming presidential election was in one of the buildings at the time of the attack, but escaped unharmed.

From DVIDS: http://www.dvidshub.net/?script=news/news_show.php&id=36814

An attempt to attack several government buildings in the city of Khost, eastern Afghanistan, was unsuccessful today. The insurgents perpetrating the attack were killed by Afghan national security forces.

The ANSF thwarted the attack as several insurgents tried to destroy the front gate of the police headquarters. ANSF personnel responded before the insurgents could gain entry into the police compound.

In another part of the city, six suicide bombers were killed while trying to storm a government building.

"A group of militants inside of a car filled with explosives tried to bypass a secured checkpoint at an Afghan military hospital," said Lt. Col. Stephan Smith, commander of 2nd Battalion, 377th Field Artillery Regiment. "The vehicle exploded, injuring two Afghan national policemen and two civilians ... the ANSF saved lives today."

Free Phone Calls For Soldiers

I had a chance to sit down over the phone and talk with the two gentlemen who started this website, and what a great pair. Did I mention that they are both Soldiers? Both of the founders of this site are active duty Soldiers and have done some tremendous work!

http://www.joeonthemove.com/

Part of the website is dedicated to being a classified ads website for Soldiers to utilize to sell things. The other half of the site is what has me really excited though.

Normally if you are deployed overseas, you have to use the MWR phone-lines, the Internet cafe, or if you are lucky enough, you have Internet in your room. The issue is for Soldiers who only have access to an Internet cafe you can not download programs like Skype to the computer. Joeonthemove.com addresses this, and fixes that issue.

Larry, one of the two founders, walked me through the procedure over the phone. Within 2 minutes I was placing a phone call for free! That easy! He has worked with corporate sponsors that are displayed on the website and shown immediately before every phone call to keep the cost absolutely free for Soldiers.

My hat is off to these two Soldiers. They truly are doing great things for their brothers and sisters in arms. I highly recommend checking out the website and passing it along.

DUSTOFF and our Combat Medics

Unfortunately I have had a great deal of experience with Dustoff. I say that because if you are making that call, then someone is wounded, and usually wounded pretty badly. But, no matter what, they always come. No matter the amount of enemy fire, no matter the conditions, no matter what; they always come for us Infantrymen.

They and our Combat Medics are some of the bravest and most heroic men I have ever met and served with. Our Combat Medics are absolute Angels on the Battlefield. Many times giving their lives to save our wounded. They shoulder a huge burden for us, both physical and emotional.

To all the Dustoff MEDEVAC Crews out there and all the Combat Medics, you have my absolute and undying gratitude and thanks. Thank You for always being there for us!

God Bless America

Afghanistan and Europe

This post is inspired by a conversation we had in my class today, and by my thesis that I am currently writing for my Masters. For those of you who regularly follow me, you know I've been hammering away on it for the last few months. I am hoping to have the draft complete this week. We will see how many revisions have to be made after that.

But I digress. The point of this post is to discuss the federal system of governance and it's many positive implications for a nation-state. Europe in the 16th and 17th Centuries was just exiting the Dark Ages, and the Age of Enlightenment was beginning. What would follow is quite interesting.

You see up until this point and in all honesty for the next three hundred years Europe had many issues, and experienced many growing pains. The religious wars that were fought made many actions within the current Middle East seem tame by comparison. The Catholic and Protestant nations and their military forces were quite literally at each other's throats. Governments had extremely low levels of penetration within their nation-states. Regionalism, and tribalism was quite high. Revenue generation and revenue sharing was almost non-existent. Ethnic grievances were extremely high.

So what happened? First, education began to take hold at many levels within society. The enlightenment was the beginning of this, followed by various romantic movements that strove to reconcile the natural world with the tensions of the creative genius. (1) Second the feelings of Nationalism began to take hold, spurned on in many ways by the results of the French Revolution. Third, and most importantly to me, was that many of these European Nations made the movement to a federal system of government. Some chose Republics, some Constitutional Monarchies, but the result was the same.

The federal system of governance allowed for alleviation of many of these above mentioned issues. It allowed for greater governmental penetration of it's territories. It addressed and reduced ethnic tensions and grievance by allowing for peaceful conflict resolution. It provided a form and function for revenue generation and effective revenue sharing. Regionalism and Tribalism found a positive outlet within this system and reinforced a federal state.

Truth be told, this system of governance has been being modified continually since then. Spain and Belgium are examples of nation-states that have been modifying their federal systems through the present day. Both nation-states had many unresolved issues still, and their movement to greater federalism to include autonomous areas continued to address these issues.

What does this mean for Afghanistan? If we overlay the above-mentioned issues, we find great parallels. The religious wars between the Catholics and Protestants are seen once again in the tensions between the Sunni and Shiite. You may be thinking that this is not an issue in Afghanistan. Think about this for a moment. The fundamentalist / insurgent groups within Afghanistan are primarily Sunni. Al Qaeda and the Taliban are both extremist splinters from Sunnism. Many of the old "Northern Alliance" Tribes are Shiite in nature. Large amounts of money from private organizations in the Gulf States continue to flow into these Extremist Sunni Based Groups and their Madrassas in order to check the Shiites in the north of the country. Quite simply they do not want Shiites and Iran to gain too much influence.

Governmental penetration and ethnic grievances and tensions are another obvious parallel. So is the issue of revenue creation and sharing. Afghanistan is currently trying to form an economic plan to make itself viable. They also are trying to create revenue sharing where the local population is given money for stability, security, and infrastructure. Instead of money flowing from outside sources only through the central government, it would create an ebb and flow of revenue creation and sharing. Is this beginning to sound familiar?

Truth be told, this is not the first time that a developing nation-state has faced these challenges. Many would have us believe that these are unique issues and the first time we have seen them. Simply not true. We only have to look at our history lessons to see the very same trends.

Federal systems of governance are not perfect, but they in my personal opinion are the best option for dealing with many of these challenges that are facing Afghanistan. Afghanistan will be won or lost as a nation-state at the local level. The people and the local government are the decisive battle that must be won. A federal system of governance does just that. It addresses the challenges and issues at the local level in the framework of a national government. For examples, we only have to look at our European History textbooks.

The question of how we execute this and how Afghanistan could establish a federal system of governance is a discussion for another night.

God Bless America

Media Twelease for #militarymon Tune

Shelle from Soldier's Angels sent this to me, and I had to pass it on. Please read on.

God Bless America and thank you for all you do Shelle, Greta, JP, and Rick.

Bryan

JULY 19, 2009- According to the world famous website Milblogging.com, #MilitaryMon (Military Monday) was the brainchild of Greta Perry (@kissmygumbo). She came up with the idea as a way to show organized support for the military on Twitter. Perry teamed up with celebrities like Carson Daly (@carsondaly) to help organize the Military Monday trend.

JP from milblogging.com (@milblogging) continues to state that the purpose of using a universal hashtag like #MilitaryMon is so everyone can remember it and when searching for conversations on Military Monday they can bring up all the results. So instead of having to type in milmonday or militarymonday or milmon separately, they can just type in #MilitaryMon to see what everyone is discussing.

Or in this case, what they are singing. Enter into the twittersphere Rick Elliot(@madbaldscotsman) who is a social networker with many interests. He loves to interact with everyone… all walks of life, all over the world. He is a loving father and husband. In the military arena he has 25+ years invested and is a WO1 in charge of a transportation unit maintenance section in the Los Angels area and will promote to CW2 in December of 2009. He writes and records music and has an album out under the name of Rick Elliott on Napster, iTunes, etc.

Shelle Michaels ( @publicrelations ), a long time military advocate with organizations Soldiers' Angels and Vet Tix and scholared social networker utilitzing the system to advance public relations campaigns, was scrolling through #militarymon hashtag threads and came upon @madbaldscotsman and reviewed his blog. One of his enteries was a lengthy discussion about MANIC MONDAY. @publicrelations, a music fanatic herself then contacted @madbaldscotsman to discuss using his energy towards creating a song in support of #MilitaryMon.

This is where we are enlisting the help of all #MilitaryMon supporting Tweeps; we need your poems, phrases, tweets or notes of what inspires you to #MilitaryMon tweet. @madbaldscotsman will compose a ballad that has been inspired by one and all to continue in our mission of support for those that serve and those that have served. Please send your released material along with your permission to utilize it in this composition to ShelleMichaels@msn.com or madbaldscotsman@yahoo.com. Our deadline is July 31, 2009 for all submissions, as we want to unveil this song by October 26th, 2009 which is also known across America as Day of the Deployed.

US Casualties 20July09

There has been a number of casualties today.

Afghanistan: http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/world/la-fg-afghan-violence21-2009jul21,0,1967305.story

A roadside bomb killed four American soldiers in eastern Afghanistan today, adding to the toll in what has already been the conflict's deadliest month for Western forces. The latest deaths push the number of coalition troops killed in July to at least 55 -- 30 of them American.

U.S. military officials have forecast a bloody summer in Afghanistan, in part because thousands of newly arrived American troops are pushing into areas previously controlled by the Taliban.

There was also a Marine killed yesterday in Iraq: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/20/world/middleeast/20iraq.html

Please keep them and their families in your thoughts and prayers right now.

God Bless America, and may he be with our fallen Heroes and their Families.

Why We Fight

Warning: This video does have some semi-graphic scenes of war injuries to children.

This is a video posted in 2008 of the Kabul Children's Hospital. US Military Members are delivering toys, clothes, and other supplies to the children.

If I could name three reasons Why We Fight, I would give these three:

1. Defend our Nation
2. Free people from tyranny and oppression
3. Help these children so they can grow up in peace, and them and their own children never have to live through this again

Great Organization!!!

I just found out about this organization, and all I can say is Wow! What a tremendous group of people doing tremendous things for our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen! Check them out! The link and their description is listed below.

God Bless America

Bryan

"The kind of people who volunteer to serve their country, the ones who put their nation first and their own lives second, are the kind of people we need to honor everyday. Not just on Memorial Day, Veteran’s Day and the Fourth of July, but everyday.

Through The Veteran Tickets Foundation, now those who care about Veterans have a way to give back. Everyday, in every city, there are events with empty seats that could be filled by those who served. More than that, many event tickets are simply unaffordable for average people. We believe the events that bring Americans together in the spirit of celebration, competition and camaraderie—those all-American moments are the times we need welcome and acknowledge our Veterans.

We are a national non-profit, non-governmental 501c(19) tax-exempt organization. All contributions made to the organization are deductible under section 170 of the IRS Code. But most importantly, we’re a dedicated group of business people who are also Veterans.

We served our country. And now it’s our privilege to serve Veterans and to provide an opportunity for the rest of America to express its thanks and gratitude.

When Veterans go to an event or their favorite sports team for free, we want them to feel a collective “thank you” from all of us to all of them."

LTG William B Caldwell IV Bloggers Round Table

I had the distinct honor today of taking part in the Army Military Blogger's Round Table discussion with LTG William B Caldwell IV. A senior officer and the Commander of Fort Leavenworth, Kansas and the US Army's Combined Arms Center who I have a great deal of respect for. The group attending the round table was able to discuss with him a number of very important issues. I am going to stick to those that I think were the top three.

The first issue, as many of you will recognize as being near and dear to my heart, is education and training of our Soldiers, NCO's and Officers. I completely agree with LTG Caldwell's comments about where we are and where we need to go. The Army and the Combined Arms Center is making a concerted effort to identify the trends and tactics that are applicable and to ensure the widest possible dissemination of them. One of the new ways that this is being accomplished is through a wiki style site, where 7 ATTP's have been uploaded for discussion. In my humble opinion this is a great idea to generate discussion, understanding, and maintain their relevance with our ever-changing operational environment. You do have to be an ID Card Holder to access it, IE, able to access Army Knowledge Online.

ATN Site (Army Wiki): https://atn.army.mil/

The second area was that of Design. I have talked about Design before, but just a quick recap is probably in order. Design is the thought process that is being developed by the School of Advanced Military Studies to properly understand the situation a leader will find himself in. It concentrates on what is the actual problem, through framing the problem correctly, and then moving into a solution space that provides linkages to planning that will accomplish the right mission. In short, it ensures that we are solving the right problem and not the wrong problem well.

A concern I have had, is how do we now take this from the educational environment and transfer it to the operational Army in a codified manner and training perspective. A lot of great work has been done on this with the draft of FM 5-0 that I believe will be out sometime this fall. It was very reassuring to hear LTG Caldwell talk about the continued importantance of Design and that Joint Forces Command, other Military Schools, The Inter-Agency, and the force in general is watching this and involved in it.

Finally LTG Caldwell discussed the importance of blending the needs of the current Operational Army and the needs for education / training. One aspect of this is the usage of mentors who have multiple combat tours and establishing a pattern that they can be utilized within to educate our future senior leaders and at the same time not pulling them from the Operational Army for too long. The second is the issue of training for your mission in a geographically specific area and trying to balance that with training across the spectrum of core competencies in regards to Major Combat Operations. The Army has recognized with the current shortened dwell times (time a soldier and unit is home between deployments) that this has become difficult and a challenge. But is looking to the future as to how we will go back to training for both as dwell times for Soldiers and Units increase.

LTG Caldwell ended by giving an open invitation to check out the US Army's Combined Arms Center Blog Site. Being here on Fort Leavenworth right now for school, I have been on it a great deal, and I can not say enough about it. I highly recommend checking them out. This site as opposed to ATN is completely open to the general public. There is no sign in procedures.

For me personally, it was very reassuring hearing the steps that the Army was taking to address challenges, and their plans for continued development of our leaders. A good organization tries to keep pace with what it is doing, a great organization looks to the future to address those challenges also. That is exactly what LTG Caldwell and the US Army are doing.

An Incredible Story From Bataan

From CNN: http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/07/13/bataan/index.html

The man's almond-shaped eyes, dark hair and olive skin -- Steele had seen those Asian facial features before.

He saw that face when he watched Japanese soldiers behead sick men begging for water, run over stumbling prisoners with tanks and split his comrades' skulls with rifle butts.

"Men died like flies," Steele says. "I thought for a while I would never make it."

Steele, now 91, is one of the last survivors of the Bataan Death March.

During World War II, the Japanese army forced American and Filipino prisoners of war on a march so horrific that the Japanese commander was later executed for war crimes.

Steele returned home to Montana after the war to teach, but he still had something to learn.

When he saw a young Japanese-American student seated in his class one day, he felt both anger and anguish.

What, he wondered, do I do with all of the hate I've brought home with me?

An incredibly moving article, and from what I have seen book. I am looking forward to reading it.

God Bless America, Ben Steele, and all of our POW and MIA Soldiers.

Great Story About SSG Begaye

From US CENTCOM: http://www.centcom.mil/en/what-we-do/silver-star-soldier-wants-others-to-understand-combat-reality.html

This is a tremendous story. Great job SSG Begaye and I salute you. Excerpt is below:

Even as Army Staff Sgt. Conrad Begaye relived the firefight that took the lives of his fellow soldiers, and even as he was awarded the military’s third-highest honor for valor Tuesday, his thoughts were on his comrades.

Begaye, a Navajo from Black Canyon City, Ariz., said he wants the story of his actions in Afghanistan to help younger soldiers understand the importance of training, leadership and motivation. For troops eager to see combat, he said, he hopes his story instills a sense of the reality of war.

"It should open their eyes. A firefight is a life-altering experience - one that I'm still living through," Begaye said following a June 30 ceremony here in which he received the Silver Star. "Soldiers should understand … this is real life, and people do die."

On Nov. 9, 2007, Begaye, an Airborne Ranger with the 503rd Infantry Regiment’s 2nd Battalion, was part of a unit that had just met with local leaders in Afghanistan’s Nuristan province. They were hiking along rugged terrain when his squad, his platoon's headquarters sections and a squad of Afghan soldiers began taking fire from enemy positions above.

Pinned down at first, Begaye was struck in the arm while returning fire and directing his men. Begaye bounded over a cliff, calling to his troops to follow him down the rocky slope to find cover.

Keeping his composure against overwhelming odds, Begaye directed and encouraged his fellow soldiers under heavy fire. One paratrooper had been shot in both legs and was still taking fire. Begaye called out to him to play dead, knowing the enemy would shift their fire away if they thought the soldier was killed -- quick thinking that likely helped to save that soldier's life.

National Infantry Museum

The new National Infantry Museum is now open. Thank You very much to my good friend Angelia for forwarding the story to me. I have no idea how I missed it.

I was very proud reading this article about the museum and LTG Hal Moore. Very proud to be counted amongst the ranks of my fellow Infantrymen, and to know that the Fort Benning / Columbus GA Community, and Nationwide Assistance and Donors made this possible. To everyone who helped make this hallowed ground possible, thank you.

http://www.ledger-enquirer.com/200/story/753548.html

A walking cane in his left hand, a Cavalry Stetson adorned with three stars atop his head, retired Lt. Gen. Hal Moore walked.

An 87-year-old battle-scarred soldier in his dress blue uniform, Moore experienced “The Last 100 Yards,” the signature exhibit of the new National Infantry Museum and Soldier Center at Patriot Park on Thursday night.

On the eve of the grand opening, about 175 military leaders, past and present, including former Secretary of State and retired Gen. Colin Powell and Vice Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army Gen. Peter W. Chiarelli, gathered for a formal dinner and tour of the facility. The gathering included philanthropists from Columbus and throughout the country who helped make the museum possible.

On this night, Moore walked through the American Revolution, into the Civil War, into two World Wars and through Korea.

All along the way, he stopped and dutifully read the markers describing each battle depicted.

He walked slowly, but he walked with purpose.

As Moore neared the top of the ramp, he stopped.

Vietnam. Air Assault at Landing Zone X-Ray.

“I am familiar with this one,” he said as he marched toward the marker.

He stopped. Got as close to the words describing battle as his eyes would allow. He squinted. And he read every single word.

As he read, his face was a portrait of concentration, lips pursed.

He walked up to the helicopter, a video screen playing on the inside. The grass moved as if the chopper was landing.

It was all too real.

He looked into the face of one of the soldiers captured in a large photo inside the exhibit.

“That was one of my men,” Moore said.

These were Moore’s men, this was his fight.
