Overlooked Brain Trust....No, Not At All!

Thank You Melissa for pointing me to this article written by Ms. Courtney Martin at The American Prospect. The link to The American Prospect and the article that she wrote is included below. This post is also being forwarded to the editor as a response to the article that Ms. Martin wrote.

http://www.prospect.org/cs/articles?article=the_militarys_overlooked_brain_trust

Within the article, the author argues that the Military still has two distinct challenges facing it, and that we have neglected and are woefully missing the point on them. Ms. Martin, however, has completely missed the point as to how the Military functions.

She argues that Military Officers will not engage in public discourse about National Strategy and Policy. That we are still locked into our old mindset of not joining the debate on what the United States should do about situations like Afghanistan and Iraq.

"In the next breath, however, Heverly told me that moral questions and big-picture strategy aren't his area of expertise. Soldiers are still taught to talk only about "what they know." The enduring authoritarian structure and culture of the Army -- and the entire military for that matter -- leaves precious resources like Heverly sharing these stories and thoughts at the gym with buddies or at the pub, not playing a role in influencing policy."

Ms. Martin, with all due respect, you are missing the point completely. If we go back to Samuel Huntington's seminal work, The Soldier and the State, you might begin to understand the complexities. We are a nation founded upon civilian control of the Military. It is a hallmark of our society that many have fought and died to preserve over the many years of our great Nation. Our elected and appointed civilian leadership engages in National Policy decisions, and for good reason. Throughout history, and even amongst the nations of the world today, nations that do not have this buffer between their military and policy formulation have a high degree of military influence over their government. This has also led to a high occurence of military take-overs of the legitimate government. That is not what the United States stands for.

That is not to say that we do not have a voice though. The Chairmen of the Joint Chiefs has an expressed duty and responsibillity to be the senior military advisor to the Secretary of Defense and the President of the United States. The President also routinely confers with his Unified and Sub-Unified Commands. A perfect example of this is the assessment that General McChrystal just sent to President Obama. He was asked to complete an assessment of the mission in Afghanistan for the National Command Authority. He did just that and now it is being evaluated along with other elements of the National Leadership. All of these elements are taken into account when deciding what strategy is best for Afghanistan and our Nation. That does not sound like an organization that is unable to give its opinion.

Secondly, Ms. Martin states that this problem with listening to subordinates permeates the entire Military.

"The Army boasts about its intention to train "agile and adaptive leaders who are creative and critical thinkers," but there is still no mechanism by which those who make the orders listen to those who follow them. Soldiers, even at surprisingly high ranks, are trained to see the trees, not the forest. They are conditioned to not talk back or question the wisdom of those in authority."

I don't have another expert such as Samuel Huntington to espouse in this response, but I do have twelve years of active service as an Infantry Leader to use for examples. First, I have witnessed time and time again, Brigade and Battalion Commanders personally discoursing with officer and enlisted Soldiers about issues, challenges, missions, and operations; and then taking that input and making immediate changes to the way our units were operating. Secondly, organizations such as unit professional development centers have begun around the Army focusing on training Soldiers in leadership, academics, personal growth, and how to think through complex problems. I have just spent the last twenty-one months learning how to think about complex and complicated problems at the Command and General Staff College and the School of Advanced Military Studies. Not once, did speaker/professor/Army leader tell me WHAT to think.

In the last nine months at the School of Advanced Military Studies, the entire focus has been on providing us the tools to understand complex, complicated, and ambigious problems; to understand the theory of transformation between what is the actual situation and the desired situation; and, finally, how to achieve that transformation. Put quite simply, it is all about the big picture visualization to insure we are solving the right problem, the right way. No lingering in the trees without realizing you are in the forest.

Within the Military, at every level, Soldiers understand that their opinion and ideas matter. They are not afraid to put them forward, and routinely do so to the great benefit of the unit. At the highest levels of the Military, this occurs again between our Military Leaders and the Civilian Leadership of our Country. These are not the actions of an organization that is afraid of discourse. But, rather one that is built upon it, and at the sametime, understands it's critical place within our Nation. An overlooked brain trust? No, not at all! Our Soldiers are the strength and the intelligence of our Military!

God Bless America

#Militarymon Tribute 27-28SEP09

I usually try to highlight something for #Militarymon on Twitter. In the past it has been my Soldiers who never made it home, or the, "Good News", stories that are lacking so much from the Main Stream Media. Tonight though, I would like to pay tribute to our Military Families.

Our Gold Star and Blue Star Mothers and Military Families have given a great deal to the Global War on Terror. Many times we highlight us, who are deployed overseas in harms way. In my humble opinion though, it is much harder on those who are left at home, and keep the home fires burning, awaiting our return.

They are the ones who must wait and wonder if they will ever hear from or see us again. They are the ones who diligently wait for emails and phone calls that absolutely make their day. They are the ones who diligently send mail and care packages to us. They are the ones who volunteer and help the Family Readiness Groups.

They are also the ones who receive the phone call in the middle of the night saying that we are wounded, or the knock on the knock on the door saying that we have fallen in the service of our Great Nation.

My gratitude and respect for my Family and to all of the Military Families can not even be put into words.

Thank You for all you do, Thank You for standing by us, and Thank You for just being You!

Once More Into The Breach....

Some of you have guessed at it. Some of you know, because I told you:) . Some of you have asked me about it. I have waited until now though, because I wanted to make sure it was certain. As of this weekend, it is very certain.

I, and my Blog will be deploying back to Afghanistan for my third deployment. I am honored and completely excited to be given the honor of serving my Country once again in harms way.

Nothing will change. I can not promise that I will have the connectivity that I have now. But, I will strive to live up to my mission statement that I wrote when I started this endeavor almost a year and a half ago. To bring you the truth of what is happening overseas with America's Sons and Daughters. To tell you the good news stories that America's precious treasure is accomplishing. To tell you why it is vitally and critically important for us to finish the missions in Iraq and Afghanistan.

SFC Jared Monti Congressional Medal of Honor

SFC Jared Monti's parents will recieve the Congressional Medal of Honor today in place of their son who gave his life in service to his Country in Afghanistan. The link's below go into much greater detail on what he did, but I can sum it up in this way. SFC Monti is an American Hero, the epitomy of what an NCO is and should be, and an outstanding Gentlemen. He gave his life to save one of his Soldier's lives. From the Christian Bible we see the quote from Jesus, "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." (John 15:13) That is exactly what SFC Monti did. I am filled with pride that we have Men like this in our Army and great sorrow in losing such a tremendous Man and NCO.

May the road rise up to meet you,
May the sun be always at your back,
And until we meet again Jared,
May God hold you in the palm of his hand.

I salute you SFC Jared Monti.

God Bless You and your Family, and may God Bless America.

Afghanistan

"All that is necessary for the triumph of evil, is for good men to do nothing"

-- Edmund Burke

It seems like everytime that I turn on the news there is some political pundit, politician, academic, or political activist stating no more Troops for Afghanistan, and pull our Troops out now. It must be nice to be able to make statements, with no regard for our Allies, Enemies, National Security Policy, and our own Nation's security.

First off, whether you agree with why we went to War in Afghanistan, the simple fact is we are there now. Which leads to a very important concept. "If you break it, you bought it", sounds like something you would tell your children. But, within International Law and Norms if you invade a country, and unseat their government, you are responsible for rebuilding it. So we, very simply put, have a solemn and legal responsibillity to help rebuild the Country of Afghanistan.

Secondly, we have in good faith, in treaties, and in military arrangements given our word to helping the Afghans build and restore their country, military, infastructure, and government. Do we no longer believe in our word? Do we no longer believe in our honor? We have spilt blood in the same mud alongside these heroic men who have put themselves, and their families in grave danger by siding with us. How can we abandon them? Very simply put, We Can Not!

Third, what about our Allies? Afghanistan is not a US Mission alone. ISAF is a NATO Mission that has in addition to NATO, Non-NATO Countries. Would these people stating we should withdraw and basically cut-and-run also be able to publicly state we should abandon our allies? If we withdraw unilaterally from Afghanistan we will never be able to construct a coalition again, and very well may hurt NATO drastically.

Fourth, what of our National Security Policy, and Policy Statements issued by the Obama Administration? It has been stated over and over again in various forms that we as the United States want to defend freedom, secure our Nation,  and to safeguard American interests. How does a withdrawal from Afghanistan accomplish any of those? It doesn't!

Finally, what about the enemies of our Nation? If we withdraw from Afghanistan now, we are not only abandoning the Afghan people, and our Allies; we are allowing the Taliban and Al Qaeda to return and create another safe-haven. By withdrawing we would be causing the further and exponential destabilization of the region, of Afghanistan specifically, and putting our country in great danger.

Basically, what these people are doing by advocating an immediate withdrawal is creating the situation that Edmund Burke describes. By, withdrawing now, we would be enabling a victory by the forces of evil in this world. We can not and must not do that!

"Have You Forgotten" by Darryl Worley

I wanted to include this video last night in my post on 9-11, but could not find an embeddable version. Many thanks to Fiona and Thomas who sent me links to versions that could be. You made my morning!

On a side note, Darryl Worley is truly a great gentlemen. In 2003 we were testing and transforming to Stryker Infantry shortly before our deployment to Iraq. We were away from home for about 90 days for this period of the train up. Out of the blue, our entire Battalion Task Force was invited to his concert. Darryl even went so far as to pull most of the Soldiers onto stage with him during the concert. I can not say eneough about him.

September 11th And Have We Forgotten?

I was going to start this post off with the Darryl Worley Video, "Have You Forgotten", but Universal Music Group has all the embedding disabled on their videos. But that is ok. Its a great song, and he's a great guy, so just think about the song as you read this article.

This post started off completely differently two days ago when I began writing it. My original intent was to highlight all the good that has happened since then, and my memories of it. I no longer think that is the correct way to go.

You see, over the last 48 hours, I have heard a phrase over and over again, and it has really begun burning me up inside. Maybe it's because since September 11th, 2001, I have lost more good Friends and Soldiers then I care to count anymore. Maybe because many those times I was there as they breathed their last breath. Maybe it's because in the Military our families have given so much, that it will take years to catch up with one another. Maybe it's all of the above.

This is not me whining. I raised my right hand fully knowing what I was doing. I wholeheartedly believe in my Oath of Commissioning, and the sacrifices that it asks for. That is what I signed up for, to defend my Country at any price; and trust me I understand those costs and would pay it gladly. But, when I hear political analysts stating that we could have paid for health care and fixed the economy if not for, "Those Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan", I get just a bit angry. Well in all truth, I get downright flaming mad.

Have we forgotten that almost eight years ago four planes loaded with our fellow citizens were hijacked? Have we forgotten that three of them were used to destroy the World Trade Center and attack the Pentagon? Have we forgotten that Todd Beamer and his fellow passengers rallied themselves and saved a fourth attack on DC from happening? I know that for many of you that is a resounding no, especially those of you who follow the blog. But, for many right now, especially those who are on television trying to discuss current issues, I would say yes, they have forgotten. If not for "Those wars in Iraq and Afghanistan" how could we look the survivors in the eye.

It has been eight years since we had an attack on our Nation. I am convinced that this Nation is safer today due to the Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The terrorists do not spend all of their time trying to find ways to kill us in our own country.  Instead, they are forced to fight for their lives. Afghanistan is working through its issues, with the help of the US, NATO, and the international community instead of being forced into becoming a terrorist harboring nation with a penalty of death to any opposition. A people long oppressed by the PDPA, Soviets, and then the Taliban are finally breathing the cool air of freedom. The Iraqi people no longer suffer under a tyranical regime. Instead, they are exercising their freedom and moving forward everyday with establishing their country as a strong and vibrant part of the Middle East.
If not for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, none of this would have been possible.

There are still elements calling for us to, "cut and run." History tells us different. We made that mistake once before after the Soviets were defeated. We abandoned our allies and created a vacuam for the Taliban to come to power in. We can not and will not do that again. The ramifications will be ten times as bad and only lead to making our Nation more vulnerable to another 9-11 or worse. If not for the longevity of these Wars, we could be facing a stronger and rejuvenated enemy.

Have the Wars been costly for our nation? Yes. There is no doubt that these have been long years for our Nation, our Military and our Military Families. However, to speak of the cost in economic terms, I believe, is wrong. I prefer to think of the price of the War in terms of our precious National Treasure, namely our young Men and Women. We must stay the course now so that our investment of this National Treasure, insuring our nations' security for the future, is not wasted.

"Freedom itself was attacked this morning by a faceless coward. Freedom will be defended!" -- President George W Bush.

I think it is time that our Nation looks back and remembers these words from President Bush. We did not start this War, but we will finish it. If not for these Wars our Nation would most likely have been attacked again. If not for these Wars the people of Afghanistan and Iraq would still be living under the boot of oppression and tyranny. If not for these Wars there would not be a democratic styled nation in Iraq. If not for these Wars, women and children would still be raped at will in Iraq and Afghanistan. If not for these Wars, men, women, and children would still be killed at random and at will in Afghanistan.

The next time a political analyst wants to make complaints about the economy or paying for health care, and blame it on the War, I hope they take a second to remember all the young Men and Women who have fought and died for you to have the ability to make that statement. Maybe next time, you will remember why we are in this War and what that really means instead of demeaning the sacrifices of so many.

Ends, Ways, and Means...

A number of people have asked questions of me via email about my post, "Why Afghanistan Matters" a few days ago. Comments from it have even been featured in a number of other blogs, of which I am very honored about. But, to get to some of the questions surrounding Afghanistan:

The first one I received was a question regarding why do we have to do this only as a military, what about State and USAID, our allies, and the UN. My answer is yes to all of the above. When I talk about the fact I firmly and completely believe that we must finish the mission in Afghanistan, I am discussing the Ends. In simpler terms, the end-state of the mission. The end-state is a separate issue, that I will address next, but just stay with me for a moment.

The End-State is finishing our mission in Afghanistan. How we do that is not just a military issue. The ways and means in which we accomplish that must incorporate all elements of our National Power; the diplomatic, information, military, and economic all working in concert. Afghanistan is not a military problem alone. State, USAID, DEA, DOE, and all of the remainder of our three letter agencies must be completely involved. On top of that ISAF is not a US Command. It is a NATO Command. That means that our allies must be involved. In addition to NATO, other nation-states in the region must be involved. Finally, the UN and its agencies must be involved. That is the only way we will achieve success; working within a unity of effort of all those groups and synchronizing ourselves to achieve our end-state.

But, as I said that leads to a much more complex and complicated question. What is our end-state? That is an answer that needs to be examined. People like to throw out words like stabile, secure, and prosperous. Well, tell me what those mean for the Afghans. In other words, "Tell Me How This Ends." We must be much more specific in our discussions of the end-state. We must firmly say what is our desired and tolerated end-states, and we must be very precise. We must also understand that any end-state that we desire must be in accordance with what the Afghans themselves want and is within the propensity of their system to achieve.

Once we have laid that out, then we should go back and decide what is going to be our logic of transformation that brings the current system that is Afghanistan to the desired system. That is deciding our ways and means. Which resources are we going to use. USAID will be doing this, State will do that, the Military will accomplish this. They will have these resources, and operate upon these lines of effort to achieve it. That is how we must understand this problem.

The final question asked has been one of governance in Afghanistan. I could write about that for days since it is also the Thesis I am working on right now for my Masters. But, I digress. Beyond the election issues, beyond the corruption claims, I am a firm believer that focusing a great deal of effort upon the central government is counter-productive. That a federal system of governance with autonomous areas that allows for greater concentration of effort and building at the local level is the best course of action. I am not going to go into much more detail on that one, since in about a month when the Thesis is complete, I will post a link to it on the web for you to read if you would like.

But, no matter what form of government exists, we must go forward within our lines of effort concentrating at the local level within Afghanistan. The local village and district level is where this effort is going to be won or lost, and GEN McChrystal realizes that.

The Line You Don't Cross

One of the followers of the site directed me to this news story, and I was absolutely appalled. Thank You very much Aimee!

http://news.yahoo.com/s/politico/20090904/pl_politico/26759

http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2009/09/04/2053049.aspx

http://www.armytimes.com/news/2009/09/military_ap_photo_gates_bernard_090409w/

This is an absolute abomination for a number of reasons:

1. The family asked that it not be published.
2. DOD and specifically the SECDEF asked that it not be published.

AP decided to ignore all of that and move ahead with publishing the photo. By doing so, violating two requests and adding undue anguish to the family of this fallen Hero. Just imagine for a second that this was your son, daughter, husband, wife, or friend. Would you want to see those photos on the cover of newspapers around the world the day or two after you were notified they had been killed?

The AP had these comments to say:

“AP journalists document world events every day,” AP director of photography Santiago Lyon said in a small story that was part of the package. “Afghanistan is no exception. It is our journalistic duty to show the reality of the war there, however unpleasant and brutal that sometimes is.”

Sorry, but it is your journalistic duty to tell the story. Not to publish photos that capture a dying Marines last moments to be shown around the world, including to his family. You crossed the line, and you owe a huge apology to the Family, the Military, and the American People. In addition, you have caused them undue anguish and grief. You need to make reparations to the family for this and your photographers should be booted from all embedded assignments until this practice is changed.

God Bless America, Lance Corporal Joshua Bernard, and his Family. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
